Using a Cash Drawer

A cash drawer provides a secure method to store cash and checks received. PetLinx Desktop supports the use of any cash drawer, connected to either an Epson receipt printer or the serial port on your computer. We also support cash drawers with a USB connection that use a “virtual” serial port, and the M-S cash drawers with USB connection. Please note if using PetLinx Cloud only the receipt printer connection method is supported.

Note: If you are using the network edition of PetLinx, users with the “General User” security group will only be able to open the cash drawer if the “Open Cash Drawer” permission is ticked in the System Options form, Security tab.

Setting up your Cash Drawer

  1. Connect the cash drawer to either your Epson receipt printer or computer’s serial or USB port (depending on the connection supplied with the cash drawer).
  2. In PetLinx, open the System Options form, then click the Printers and Cash Drawer tab.
  3. In the “Cash Drawer” section, select “Connected to an Epson receipt printer”, “Connected to my computer’s serial/USB port”, or “M-S Cash Drawer connected to my computer’s USB port”.
  4. If connected to an Epson receipt printer: Enter the command which is used by the printer to open the cash drawer, seperate each number with a comma (for example, for the Epson TM-T88IV and TM-T88V this is 27,112,48,55,121).
  5. If connected to the serial port: Enter the serial port number that the cash drawer is connected to. Then enter the baud rate, parity, number of data bits, and number of stop bits used to communiate with the cash drawer – these should be contained in the documentation that came with your cash drawer. Also enter the sequence used to open the cash drawer, seperate each number with a comma – again these should be contained in the cash drawer documentation, or contact the manufacturer if you are unsure what these should be.
  6. If M-S cash drawer connected to the USB port: Enter the USB port number that the cash drawer is connected to.
  7. Click the Test Cash Drawer Open button to test the opening of the cash drawer with the settings you have entered. If the settings are correct the cash drawer should open.
  8. Click OK when finished to save the settings.

Opening the Cash Drawer

The cash drawer will open whenever you print or email an invoice or payment, or enter or change a payment amount in an invoice or payment.

Cash Drawer Reporting

PetLinx keeps a log of each time the cash drawer is opened. To view this information, choose the “System Log” report from the “General” category in the Reporting Center form.
